All Aboard! New Collectible Trains Come in all Sizes
Are
you a train buff? How about a village collector AND a train buff?
There’s no question that’s a great combination. Toy trains, miniature
working trains, and ceramic train replicas have long been favored
collectibles, and lighted villages seem to come alive when there’s a
miniature railroad as part of the layout.
Model Train Scales for Village Layouts
Model trains come in dozens of different scales and gauges, some
introduced as far back as 1946. To get an overview of train scales, click

Here’s a list of train scales that work best in village layouts:
- HO Scale: the most popular toy train gauge (1:87) and
probably your best bet with D56 miniature Christmas buildings.
Matchbox-size die-cast cars also work well with this scale.
- N Scale: smaller than HO and second most popular size. Runs
on 9 mm track
- Z Scale: nearly the smallest toy railroad gauge (1:220). This
is really tiny. Suitable for table top displays.
