Department 56 Snow Village, Christmas Miniature Villages, and Halloween Village Displays

Tips for Choosing a Department 56 Series to Collect

First of all, there really no rules or “guidelines” to collecting D56. Department 56 appeals to thousands of people for thousands of unique reasons.

But if you’re a systematic person, who likes order and checking off boxes in a list, then probably the most important decision you can make when starting out is which series to collect.

Of course, there’s no rules that say you can’t have a little of this and a little of that all in the same display. But with hundreds of buildings currently available, not to mention all the accessories and other accents, it helps to have a focus—to narrow the field if you will—to a series or two.

Here’s some tips for picking a Dept 56 series to collect and some reasons why it might appeal to you.

If this describes you... Then these series are for you! Because...
  • Whimsical
  • Enjoy the child’s view of Christmas
  • A kid at heart
  • Believe in Santa Clause
  • Grandparent with little ones coming to visit
These D56 series play to the child in all of us: Santa's workshop at the North Pole, the elves making toys. It's hard to imagine Santa living any other way.
  • Traditionalist
  • Like old-fashioned Christmas
  • Victorian Christmas traditions

The Dickens series takes us back to the romance of Victorian England, the story of A Christmas Carol, to old fashioned buildings, characters, and Christmas traditions.

Christmas in the City, the Original Snow Village and New England village are for those of us who hearken to the old fashioned holiday traditions in  America.

  • European background
  • Traditional

If you have a European background, the traditional look and feel of the Alpine Village will make you right at home.
