Department 56 Snow Village, Christmas Miniature Villages, and Halloween Village Displays

Review of City Subway Entrance by Department 56

The City Subway Entrance by Department 56 was introduced in 1991 for "Christmas in the City" series and looks great in a typical bustling city scene.

It was retired in 1998 and can be hard to find. Originally selling for $15.00 book value, it can now be found on online at around $28.00.

Use the City Subway Entrance to Create a Busy City Block

Some of the most interesting "Christmas in the City" Department 56 displays recreate a busy city block during the holidays. From the turn of the 20th century onwards, big, bustling American cities had much in common.

If you were to take a step back in time to a cool December morning in New York for example, you’d find street vendors selling their wares. Buy hot and fresh pretzels from the Pretzel Cart and, pick up the morning paper at the Midtown Newspaper Stand, or treat yourself to Hot Roasted Chestnuts. Department 56 has all these busy street vendors and more in their "Christmas in the City" accessories and figurines.

The buildings you might find downtown are equally interesting. For example, display the Empire State Building, Seasons Department store, the and 1234 Four Seasons Parkway on one corner, and the City Subway Entrance, Public Library and Midtown Barber Shop on the other. Pair the buildings and figurines with a few vintage cars, motorcycles, and of course a taxicab, and you have the makings of a charming city display.

To find retired items like the City Subway Entrance, try the dealer and collector classified pages, or an online retailer, such as GoCollect with a good Department 56 retirements shop.
