Dickens Village Series—All Hallows’ Eve

If you like to decorate for Halloween but prefer the historical to the spectral, Department 56 presents All Hallows’ Eve in the Dickens Village series.

First introduced in 2002, this Halloween village series traces our modern Halloween celebrations back to 18th century Victorian England, the time of Charles Dickens.

What is All Hallows' Eve?

On All Hallows' Eve, the night of October 31st, Victorians sought to frighten away spirits roaming the earth in search of human bodies to possess. By extinguishing all candles lamps and fires, and by dressing in scary costumes, people hoped to frighten or keep these roaming spirits away.

If you were lucky enough to survive the night, you could celebrate the next morning, November 1, known then and now as "All Hollows Day" or "All Saints Day".

Village Buildings in All Hallows' Eve

The village buildings in this Dickens Village series have a decidedly gothic feel. From "All Saints Church" and "Theatre of the Macabre" to a "Horse Drawn Hearse" you can capture the gloomy essence of this dark Victorian  celebration.
